Order:   Falconiformes

Family:   Falconidae

Species:   Caracara plancus

IOC English name:  Southern Caracara

Bird of prey well known in the popular imagination, the Southern Caracara, despite presenting a look similar to that of the hawks, is related to the falcons. It measures between 50 and 60 centimeters in length and can reach 1.2m in wingspan. The Southern Caracara has a predominantly black color, with the exception of the chest, neck and lower part of the head, which are whitish, in addition to the very characteristic orange beak. It can be identified in flight by the white bar on the underside of its wings. It usually accompanies flocks of vultures in the skies, being usually confused with them by less experienced observers. He is an "opportunistic" generalist, feeding on live and dead animals, organic waste and eggs. It can be seen, usually as a couple, flying over the Campus of Praia Vermelha.
